Orthetrum testaceum, the Scarlet Skimmer, is one of the most widespread and instantly recognisable dragonflies across South and Southeast Asia, extending through the Pacific to Hawaii and beyond. A member of the large family Libellulidae, males are a uniform and vivid scarlet-red across the entire body — the species name testaceum referring to the brick-red or tile-red colouration — with largely hyaline wings that allow the brilliant body colour to take centre stage. One of the most cosmopolitan of all red dragonflies, testaceum is a classic and immediately appealing specimen that is equally at home in a beginner’s first collection or a seasoned odonatologist’s comparative Libellulidae series.
