The genus name Rhinoscapha, from the Greek rhis ("snout") and skaphe ("boat" or "vessel"), describes the uniquely shaped, boat-like rostrum that sets this genus apart from the broader weevil world — an elegant structural feature that rewards close inspection. The species name basilica, from the Latin meaning "royal" or "kingly", elevates the specimen further still — a name historically reserved for structures and institutions of the highest civic and religious importance. Found in the rainforests of New Guinea, Rhinoscapha basilica is a visually striking weevil whose iridescent scaling and distinctive form place it among the most collectible members of its genus.
