טורמלין הוא מינרל גבישי מסוג סיליקט בורון, המורכב מיסודות ובהם אלומיניום, ברזל, מגנזיום, נתרן, ליתיום ואשלגן. הוא מסווג כאבן חצי־יקרה ומופיע בקשת רחבה של צבעים — טורמלין שחור (שורל) הוא הזן הנפוץ ביותר, ומוערך בזכות מבנה הגביש הבולט והמפורץ והברק העמוק שלו.
