アンモナイトは頭足類の軟体動物で、現代のオウムガイやイカの親戚にあたります。白亜紀末に絶滅するまで、3億年以上にわたり世界の海を支配していました。エジプトの羊の角の神アモンにちなんで名付けられたアンモナイトの殻は、その巻き貝の形が神の角に似ています。サイズは数ミリから直径2メートル以上までさまざまです。このペアはマダガスカル産で、約1億1500万年前の下白亜紀に属し、最も視覚的に壮観な種を代表しています。
このペアのアンモナイトはそれぞれ中心で正確にカットされ、内部の複雑な構造—隔壁と縫合線—が露わになるように研磨されています。これらは殻を複数のガスで満たされた区画に分け、動物が浮力を得るために使っていました。マダガスカル産アンモナイト特有の虹色の鉱化により、研磨面は宝石のような輝きを放ち、光の加減で深い琥珀色から緑や金色に変化します。ディスプレイスタンド付きで、すぐに展示可能です。
