アンモナイトは頭足類軟体動物で、現代のオウムガイやイカの親戚にあたります。白亜紀末に絶滅するまで、3億年以上にわたり世界の海を支配していました。エジプトの羊の角を持つ神アモンにちなんで名付けられた彼らの殻は、その巻き貝の形状が特徴で、数ミリから直径2メートル以上まで様々な大きさがありました。このペアはマダガスカル産で、約1億1500万年前の下白亜紀に遡ります。切断・研磨されており、アンモナイトが自然界で最も研究され称賛される化石の一つとなった驚くべき内部構造が明らかになっています。
中心を正確に切断したそれぞれの半分は、殻を一連のガスで満たされた部屋に分ける複雑な隔壁と縫合線を露わにしています。これが動物が水中の深さを調節する浮力システムです。マダガスカル産アンモナイト特有の虹色の鉱物化により、研磨面は自然光の下で宝石のように輝きます。展示用スタンドが付属し、ペアとして一緒に、または別々に展示可能です。
