암모나이트는 두족류 연체동물로, 오늘날의 나틸러스와 오징어의 친척이며, 백악기 말 멸종하기 전까지 3억 년 이상 세계 해양을 지배했습니다. 이들의 껍데기는 이집트의 양뿔 신 암몬의 뿔을 닮아 이름 붙여졌으며, 크기는 몇 밀리미터에서 지름 2미터 이상까지 다양했습니다. 이 쌍은 마다가스카르에서 출토된 것으로 약 1억 1,500만 년 전 하부 백악기에 해당하며, 절단 및 연마되어 암모나이트가 자연에서 가장 연구되고 찬양받는 화석 중 하나가 된 놀라운 내부 구조를 드러냅니다.
정확히 중앙을 가로질러 절단된 각 반쪽은 껍데기를 가스가 채워진 여러 방으로 나누는 복잡한 격벽과 봉합선을 보여줍니다. 이 부력 시스템 덕분에 동물은 수중 깊이를 조절할 수 있었습니다. 마다가스카르 암모나이트 특유의 무지갯빛 광물화는 연마된 면에 자연광 아래에서 보석 같은 빛깔 변화를 선사합니다. 전시대와 함께 제공되며, 쌍으로 맞춰 함께 전시하거나 개별적으로 전시할 수 있습니다.
