Large Cut & Polished Ammonite Pair | 21cm | Lower Cretaceous | Madagascar

115 Million Years of Natural Architecture

Ammonites were cephalopod molluscs — relatives of today's nautilus and squid — that dominated the world's oceans for over 300 million years before their extinction at the end of the Cretaceous period. Named after the ram-horned Egyptian god Ammon, whose coiled horns their shells resemble, ammonites ranged in size from a few millimetres to over two metres in diameter. This pair, sourced from Madagascar and dating to the Lower Cretaceous approximately 115 million years ago, represents the species at its most visually spectacular.

Cut, Polished & Perfectly Paired

Each ammonite in this matched pair has been precisely cut through the centre and polished to reveal the intricate internal chamber structure — the septa and suture lines that divided the shell into a series of gas-filled compartments the animal used for buoyancy. The iridescent mineralisation typical of Madagascan ammonites gives the polished faces a jewel-like quality, with colours shifting from deep amber to green and gold depending on the light. Supplied with display stands, the pair is ready to display immediately.
