Cynopterus minutus is the smallest member of the genus Cynopterus — the specific epithet minutus directly reflecting its diminutive stature relative to its congeners, including the closely related C. brachyotis. Endemic to the western Indonesian archipelago — principally Sumatra, Java, Borneo, and surrounding islands — it occupies a similar ecological niche as a nocturnal frugivore and pollinator in lowland and hill forest, but at a smaller body scale.
