坎巴巴碧玉是一种沉积岩，由微晶石英与叠层石相互交织而成——叠层石是由蓝藻和其他原始微生物形成的古老化石群落。这些叠层石是地球上已知最古老的化石之一，使每块标本都成为真正古老的自然历史见证。其独特的深绿色球状图案直接记录了三十多亿年前的生命。
