菊石是頭足類軟體動物——與現代的鸚鵡螺和魷魚有親緣關係——在白堊紀末滅絕前，稱霸全球海洋超過 3 億年。牠們因外殼盤繞的形狀酷似埃及神祇阿蒙（Ammon）那對公羊角而得名，體型從數毫米到直徑超過兩米不等。這對來自馬達加斯加、距今約 1.15 億年早白堊紀的配對標本，經切割與拋光後，展現出非凡的內部幾何結構，正是這種結構使菊石成為自然界中最受研究與讚譽的化石之一。
每一半均沿中心精確切開，呈現出繁複的隔壁與縫合線；這些結構將外殼分隔成一系列充滿氣體的腔室，構成讓動物控制在水柱中深度的浮力系統。馬達加斯加菊石特有的虹彩礦化，使拋光表面在自然光下呈現變幻不定、如寶石般的質感。每半件尺寸為 20.5 × 17 公分，這是一件具有十足存在感的大型標本。隨附展示架，兩半可作為配對套組一起展示，也可分開陳列。
