Draco volans es la especie tipo del género — el dragón volador original del cual todos los demás toman su nombre — distribuido por Java, Bali y las islas adyacentes del archipiélago indonesio. El nombre es una doble declaración: Draco significa ‘dragón’ y volans significa ‘volador’ — haciendo de este literalmente el ‘dragón volador’, la especie que definió el género y dio a todo el grupo su identidad evocadora. Una adición taxonómicamente fundamental, biogeográficamente significativa y visualmente excepcional para cualquier colección seria de historia natural o estudio herpetológico.
