Draco volans è la specie tipo del genere — il drago volante originale da cui tutti gli altri prendono il nome — distribuito in Giava, Bali e nelle isole adiacenti dell’arcipelago indonesiano. Il nome è una doppia dichiarazione: Draco significa ‘drago’ e volans significa ‘volante’ — rendendo questo letteralmente il ‘drago volante’, la specie che ha definito il genere e ha dato a tutto il gruppo la sua identità evocativa. Un’aggiunta tassonomicamente fondamentale, biogeograficamente significativa e visivamente eccezionale a qualsiasi collezione seria di storia naturale o studio erpetologico.
