Lonchura majaは、マレー半島、スマトラ、ジャワ、バリに自生し、東南アジア全域に広く導入されている小型で社交的なエストリルドフィンチです。純白の頭部と栗色の体の鮮やかなコントラストで一目で識別でき、開けた草原、稲田、低木地帯に生息し、大群で見られることが多い種です。地域で人気のある鳥かごの鳥であり、Lonchura属の中でも最も特徴的なマユゲザルの一種です。このエストリルドの骨格は、種子の殻を割るために適応した頑丈なくちばし、コンパクトな叉骨、細長い後肢の骨がはっきりと保存されている、パッサー系の骨学の洗練された均整の取れた例です。真剣な自然史コレクションや芸術的展示に精密で優雅な追加となります。
