Draco volansは属のタイプ種であり、すべての他の飛翔トカゲの名前の由来となったオリジナルの飛翔トカゲです。インドネシアのジャワ島、バリ島、および周辺の島々に分布しています。名前は二重の意味を持ち、Dracoは「ドラゴン」、volansは「飛ぶ」を意味し、文字通り「飛ぶドラゴン」という意味で、この属を定義し、グループ全体に象徴的なアイデンティティを与えた種です。分類学的に基礎的で、生物地理学的に重要、かつ視覚的に卓越した標本であり、真剣な自然史コレクションや爬虫類学研究に最適です。
