世界有数の化石産地のひとつである、ユタ州ホイーラー頁岩の本来の母岩中に自然保存された、象徴的なカンブリア紀の三葉虫です。
Elrathia kingiは化石記録の中でも特に知られた三葉虫のひとつで、明瞭な形態、安定した保存状態、そしてひと目でわかる視覚的な魅力から、コレクター、研究者、自然史関連機関のいずれからも高く評価されています。これらの標本は、米国ユタ州ミラード郡アンテロープ・スプリングス、ハウス・レンジのホイーラー頁岩層に由来し、中期カンブリア紀、およそ5億700万年前に堆積したものです。
ホイーラー頁岩は、細粒の堆積物が薄く、はがれやすい層として蓄積した、穏やかな深海環境を示しています。海底の低酸素状態が大規模な腐敗を防ぎ、脆弱な遺骸を腐肉食者から守ったことで、この地層で知られる驚異的な保存状態が生まれました。ホイーラー頁岩はカンブリア紀古生物学の重要な基盤であり、三葉虫、軟体生物、希少な節足動物を非常に精密に保存しています。
Ptychopariida目に属するElrathia kingiは、カンブリア紀の三葉虫の体の構造を示す明確な例として、教育や科学研究の場で広く用いられています。主な特徴は以下のとおりです。
