トルマリンは、ホウ素ケイ酸塩鉱物の結晶で、アルミニウム、鉄、マグネシウム、ナトリウム、リチウム、カリウムなどの元素を含みます。準宝石に分類され、幅広い色彩で産出されますが、ブラックトルマリン（ショール）は最も豊富な種類であり、その力強い縞模様の結晶形態と深い光沢が評価されています。
