Thelyphonus feuerborni는 Uropygi목에 속하는 채찍전갈로, 석탄기까지 거슬러 올라가는 3억 년 이상의 화석 기록을 지닌 지구상에서 가장 오래되고 형태학적으로 독특한 거미강 계통 중 하나입니다. 자바와 인도네시아 군도의 무척추동물군을 광범위하게 연구한 독일 동물학자 Heinrich Jakob Feuerborn(1883–1969)을 기려 명명되었습니다. 일반적인 이름과 달리 채찍전갈은 진정한 전갈이 아닙니다. 완전히 별개의 거미강 목에 속하며 독샘과 독침 꼬리가 모두 없습니다. 대신 Uropygi를 특징짓는 것은 꼬리 끝의 길고 채찍 같은 편모로, 무기가 아닌 감각 기관입니다. 또한 편모 기부의 샘에서 아세트산(식초)을 포함한 방어 분비물을 분사할 수 있어 이 무리에는 ‘식초전갈’이라는 또 다른 일반명이 붙었습니다. 진정으로 고대적이며 해부학적으로 놀랍고 깊은 매력을 지닌 표본으로, 진지한 자연사 컬렉션이나 거미학 연구에 훌륭하게 어울립니다.
