Draco volans is the type species of the genus — the original flying dragon from which all others take their name — distributed across Java, Bali, and adjacent islands of the Indonesian archipelago. The name is a double declaration: Draco means ‘dragon’ and volans means ‘flying’ — making this quite literally the ‘flying dragon’, the species that defined the genus and gave the entire group its evocative identity.
