Hypsiscopus plumbea é uma cobra homalopsídea robusta e totalmente aquática, amplamente distribuída pelo Sul e Sudeste Asiático, que habita arrozais, pântanos de água doce, lagoas e rios de corrente lenta. Com o nome associado à sua distinta coloração dorsal cinzento-chumbo (plúmbea), é uma espécie de presas posteriores e ligeiramente venenosa, que se alimenta principalmente de peixes e rãs. Tal como todos os homalopsídeos, apresenta olhos e narinas posicionados dorsalmente — adaptações a um estilo de vida aquático que se refletem claramente na estrutura esquelética.
