Eocene Fossil Fish – Diplomystus sp.

Own a piece of prehistoric aquatic life with this exceptional Diplomystus fossil fish from the renowned Green River Formation. Dating back 56 to 33.9 million years to the Eocene Period, this freshwater fish is a distant ancestor of modern herrings and sardines.

Specimen Details

  • Average Size: 147mm
  • Scientific Name: Diplomystus sp.
  • Classification: Fossil Fish
  • Age: Eocene Period (56–33.9 million years ago)

Natural History

Diplomystus were open-water predators, evidenced by their distinctive upturned mouths designed for surface feeding. Fossil records reveal these ancient fish actively hunted Knightia, another common Green River genus, making them fascinating subjects for collectors interested in prehistoric predator-prey relationships.

Each specimen preserves remarkable anatomical detail, offering a window into Eocene freshwater ecosystems when vast lake systems covered what is now the American West.

Please Note: The photograph shows a representative example. Your specimen will be hand-selected from our graded stock within the stated size range. Natural variation in colour, shape, and preservation detail makes each fossil unique.
