菊石是头足类软体动物——是现代鹦鹉螺和鱿鱼的亲戚——在白垩纪末期灭绝之前，统治了世界海洋超过3亿年。它们的名字来源于埃及羊角神阿蒙（Ammon），其螺旋形的壳类似于神的卷曲角。菊石的大小从几毫米到直径超过两米不等。这对菊石来自马达加斯加，年代约为下白垩纪，约1.15亿年前，代表了该物种最为壮观的视觉形态。
这对匹配的菊石每个都被精确地从中心切割并抛光，展现出复杂的内部腔室结构——隔板和缝线将壳体分隔成一系列充满气体的隔间，动物用以调节浮力。马达加斯加菊石典型的虹彩矿化使抛光面呈现宝石般的质感，颜色随光线变化从深琥珀色转为绿色和金色。配有展示架，这对菊石可立即展示。
