A properly preserved insect specimen can retain its beauty for generations with appropriate care. Follow these guidelines to protect your investment and ensure your framed displays remain museum-quality.
Ultraviolet light is the primary enemy of preserved specimens. Direct sunlight will fade colours and degrade delicate wing scales over time. Display your frames away from windows, or use UV-protective glazing to filter harmful rays. Indirect natural light or LED lighting provides safe illumination.
Stable environmental conditions are essential. Ideal storage maintains temperatures between 18-22°C (64-72°F) and relative humidity of 40-50%. Excessive humidity encourages mould growth and can attract pests, while very dry conditions may cause specimens to become brittle.
Museum beetle larvae (Anthrenus) and other dermestid beetles can damage collections. Inspect frames periodically for signs of infestation—tiny holes, frass (insect droppings), or damaged specimens. Well-sealed frames with proper backing provide the best protection.
Handle frames by their edges to avoid fingerprints on glass. Clean glass surfaces with a soft, lint-free cloth and appropriate glass cleaner, taking care not to allow moisture to seep into the frame. Never open sealed frames unless you have proper tools and experience.
Choose locations away from heating vents, radiators, and areas with temperature fluctuations. Avoid hanging frames in bathrooms or kitchens where humidity varies. Interior walls away from exterior doors and windows provide the most stable conditions.
If storing frames, keep them upright in a climate-controlled space. Wrap in acid-free tissue and store in archival boxes to prevent dust accumulation and physical damage.
With proper care, your framed insect displays will remain stunning focal points for decades to come.
