菊石是頭足類軟體動物——與現今的鸚鵡螺和魷魚同屬近親——在白堊紀末滅絕前，曾稱霸全球海洋超過 3 億年。菊石之名源自古埃及羊角神阿蒙，因其盤曲的殼與羊角相似而得名。菊石的體型從數毫米至直徑超過 2 公尺不等。這對菊石產自馬達加斯加，距今約 1.15 億年，形成於早白堊世，展現了該物種最具視覺震撼力的一面。
這對配對菊石中的每一枚，都經過精準的中央切割與拋光，呈現複雜的內部腔室結構——隔壁與縫合線將殼體分隔成一系列充滿氣體的腔室，動物便利用這些腔室維持浮力。馬達加斯加菊石典型的虹彩礦化效果，讓拋光面呈現寶石般的質感；在不同光線下，色彩會從深琥珀色變幻至綠色與金色。此對菊石附有展示座，可立即展示。
