This bulk pack of 10 A1 quality unmounted specimens (70mm wingspan) offers exceptional value for collectors, framers, and natural history enthusiasts drawn to this iconic moth's distinctive skull-like thorax marking.
Death's Head Hawk Moths are among the most recognizable insects in the world, thanks to their eerie skull-like thorax marking that has fascinated naturalists and artists for centuries. The wings display beautiful patterns of brown, yellow, and black, while the abdomen features striking yellow and black bands. This combination of macabre symbolism and natural beauty makes them endlessly captivating.
These moths achieved iconic status through their prominent role in The Silence of the Lambs, where they symbolized transformation and became synonymous with psychological thriller aesthetics. They've since appeared in Hannibal, Clarice, and countless gothic and horror-themed artworks, making them instantly recognizable to pop culture enthusiasts worldwide.
These Death's Head moth specimens are ideal for diverse uses. Create stunning framed displays with gothic or Victorian themes, use in horror and dark art installations, embed in resin for jewellery with macabre aesthetics, stock retail shops specializing in oddities and curiosities, build educational collections demonstrating moth diversity, or incorporate into Halloween and gothic décor projects.
Your bulk pack includes 10 Death's Head Hawk Moths (Acherontia styx), each carefully preserved and unmounted. Specimens measure 70-90mm in wingspan when spread. Expect the characteristic yellow skull marking on the thorax, beautiful brown and yellow wing patterns, and the distinctive banded abdomen that makes this species so visually striking.
Death's Head Hawk Moths are found across Africa, Asia, and parts of Europe. They're unique among moths for their ability to produce a loud squeaking sound when disturbed - created by forcing air through their proboscis. They're also known for raiding beehives to feed on honey, using chemical mimicry to avoid detection by bees. These remarkable behaviours add to their mystique.
The skull marking has made Death's Head Hawk Moths symbols of death, transformation, and the supernatural across cultures. They appear in gothic literature, occult symbolism, and contemporary dark art. Owning these specimens connects you to centuries of cultural fascination with this remarkable insect and its powerful symbolic resonance.
All our Death's Head Hawk moth specimens are ethically sourced from sustainable collecting programmes. We work with responsible collectors who ensure wild populations remain healthy and habitats are protected. Full provenance documentation provided with every order.
Each specimen is graded A1 for quality, meaning excellent condition with vibrant skull markings, intact wings, and good colour retention. These are collectors-quality moths suitable for professional displays, framing, retail sale, or creative projects. The distinctive thorax marking is clearly visible on all specimens.
Whether you're creating Victorian cabinet-of-curiosities displays, gothic home décor, horror-themed art installations, or simply appreciate the macabre beauty of nature, these Death's Head moths deliver instant visual impact and cultural recognition that few other insects can match.
