Hierodula patellifera, commonly known as the Sacred Mantis, is a robust and widely distributed praying mantis found across South and Southeast Asia, extending into East Asia. A member of the large and diverse family Mantidae, it is characterised by its solid build, vivid green colouration, and the distinctive yellow or white spots on the inner surface of its forelegs — a feature that has contributed to its cultural significance in parts of Asia. One of the more frequently encountered Hierodula in collections, patellifera nonetheless makes a handsome and satisfying spread specimen, displaying the classic mantis form to excellent effect.
