Discover the striking beauty of Tosena splendida - the spectacular blue cicada from Southeast Asia. These A1 quality unmounted specimens with wings spread (100-120mm wingspan) showcase the remarkable iridescent blue-green colouration and impressive size that make this species a favourite among collectors and natural history enthusiasts.
Cicadas are among nature's most fascinating insects, famous for their loud mating calls that can reach 120 decibels. Tosena splendida is particularly prized for its beautiful colouration - the wings display an iridescent blue-green sheen that shifts in changing light, while the robust body shows subtle patterns of green, brown, and blue. This combination of size, colour, and distinctive form makes them exceptional display specimens.
These blue cicada specimens are ideal for diverse uses. Create stunning framed displays and shadow boxes showcasing insect diversity, embed in resin for jewellery and paperweights, use for scientific photography and macro work, build educational collections demonstrating cicada morphology, incorporate into mixed-media art and natural history installations, or add to entomology reference collections.
Choose your desired quantity from the drop down menu. Each large blue cicada (Tosena splendida) is supplied with wings spread, measuring 100-140mm in wingspan. The cicada arrives dry-preserved and unmounted, ready for framing or your creative projects. Expect vibrant iridescent blue-green wings, robust body structure, and the characteristic large size that makes this species so impressive.
Cicadas are hemipteran insects known for their unique life cycle - nymphs live underground for years (sometimes decades) feeding on tree roots before emerging as adults. The adult stage is brief but spectacular, focused entirely on mating and reproduction. The large wings, powerful flight muscles, and sound-producing organs (tymbals) make cicadas fascinating subjects for studying insect anatomy and behaviour.
Unlike papered specimens that require relaxing and spreading, these cicadas arrive with wings already spread in display position. This saves time and effort, making them perfect for immediate framing or mounting. The pre-spread wings showcase the full wingspan and beautiful wing venation patterns that make cicadas such visually striking insects.
All our blue cicada specimens are ethically sourced from sustainable collecting programmes in Southeast Asia. We work with local collectors who follow responsible practices, ensuring wild populations remain healthy and forest habitats are protected.
Each specimen is graded A1 for very fine condition, meaning excellent colour retention, intact wings with minimal damage, and good overall preservation. These are collectors-quality cicadas suitable for professional displays, framing, or educational use. The vibrant blue-green iridescence is well-preserved and will remain stable for decades with proper care.
Blue cicadas offer exceptional educational value. They demonstrate insect wing structure and venation, sound production organs (tymbals), piercing-sucking mouthparts adapted for feeding on plant sap, and the remarkable size diversity within the Hemiptera order. Perfect for teaching about insect diversity, life cycles, and ecological roles.
Your specimen arrives carefully packaged with protective materials to ensure the spread wings remain intact during transit. Store in a dry environment away from direct sunlight to preserve colour and prevent damage. Properly cared for, these specimens will retain their beauty for generations.
Add iridescent beauty to your collection. Order your blue cicada specimen today and discover why Tosena splendida is one of the most sought-after cicada species among collectors and natural history enthusiasts worldwide.
