The genus name Pachyrrhynchus, from the Greek pachys ("thick") and rhynchos ("snout"), describes the massively reinforced rostrum that gives this group its characteristic silhouette. But it is the surface of Pachyrrhynchus that truly sets it apart: a mosaic of iridescent, gem-like scales arranged in vivid geometric patterns of turquoise, white, and black that have made this genus the most coveted armoured weevil in the world. The species name morotaiensis places this specimen on Morotai — a remote island in the North Maluku province of Indonesia, historically significant as a Second World War battleground and biologically significant as part of the Wallacea biodiversity hotspot.
