Fossil Fish | Knightia alta | Green River Formation, Wyoming | Eocene | 65–120mm

A genuine Eocene fossil fish from one of the world's most celebrated palaeontological formations.

Knightia alta inhabited the vast freshwater lakes of Eocene North America approximately 33.9–56 million years ago. Taxonomically allied to herring and sardines, these schooling fish fed on algae, diatoms, insects, and occasionally smaller fish. They are characterised by heavy scales, small conical teeth, and distinctive rows of dorsal and ventral scutes running from behind the head to the medial fins. Among the most abundant vertebrate fossils on Earth, Knightia are nonetheless prized for their remarkable preservation and the immediate visual impact they bring to any natural history collection.

The Green River Formation of Wyoming, USA, is globally renowned for the exceptional quality of its fish fossils, preserved in fine-grained oil shale that captures skeletal anatomy in extraordinary detail.

Please note: these are genuine fossils. It is common for preparers to apply a brown protective stain to the matrix and to lightly reconstruct fin positions to contextualise the specimen. Each piece is selected from stock within the stated size range — colour, matrix character, and preservation will vary as with any natural specimen. The image shown is representative only.
