Eutropis multifasciata is one of the most abundant and widespread skinks in South and Southeast Asia — distributed from India and Sri Lanka through southern China, the Malay Peninsula, and the Indonesian archipelago to the Philippines and beyond — where it is a familiar, sun-basking inhabitant of forest edge, gardens, agricultural land, and open scrub. The specific epithet multifasciata means ‘many-banded’, referring to the species’ characteristic lateral striping pattern of multiple pale lines running along the flanks. Scincidae — the skinks — is the largest family of lizards on Earth, with over 1,500 described species, and one of the most ecologically diverse squamate radiations, ranging from fully limbed surface-active species like E. multifasciata to limbless, fossorial forms that convergently resemble snakes.
