Lonchura punctulata is one of the most widespread and successful estrildid finches in the world, native across a vast range from India and Sri Lanka through Southeast Asia to southern China, and naturalised across much of the Pacific, the Americas, and beyond. Recognised by its rich chestnut upperparts, white underparts adorned with distinctive dark scalloping — the source of its common name — and its robust, conical bill, it is a familiar and adaptable species of grasslands, rice paddies, and open scrub. The estrildid skeleton is a refined and well-proportioned example of passerine osteology — featuring the characteristic seed-husking bill, compact furcula, and slender hindlimb bones clearly preserved in this specimen. A precise and scientifically valuable addition to any serious natural history collection or artistic display.
