When ancient trees fell and were buried beneath layers of sediment — often following a volcanic eruption or flood — mineral-rich groundwater slowly replaced the organic material cell by cell. The minerals present in the surrounding soil determine the final palette: iron oxides produce warm reds and oranges, manganese creates deep blacks and blues, and silica locks the structure in place for eternity.
